City of Lies – US cover

December 10th, 2010

Can there be anything quite so exciting as receiving a sneak preview of the cover for your new novel? I doubt it, especially when the illustration is done by the amazing and very talented Jon Foster. I would love to put it up, and give you a sneak preview as well, but I can’t. So I’ll just have to gloat over it instead, in the privacy of my office.

Tibetan padlock

Heh heh heh.

But I will put up this very cool padlock, which I bought from a Tibetan man in Delhi. I was thinking about City of Lies when I bought it – locks and keys again play an important part in Goldie’s life in the second book.

    Awesome Padlock!
When does the city of lies come out here?

    1. Lian says:

Not till next October, I’m afraid, Romi. The three books are coming out a year apart, which seems dreadfully long, but was the only way we could work it to give me enough time to write them.

  2. Vered says:

We’ve been checking the bookstores not realizing that Museum of Thieves was only just published and that City of Lies won’t be released for another year! My 10-year old daughter is already looking forward to it!

    1. Siavosh says:

Well, My 10 years old daughter can’t wait till next Oct. It drove me crazy looking for it online not knowing it doesn’t come out till next year. there must be somewhere that these 10 years old are reading that the book should already be available in bookstore?

      1. Lian says:

I just realised what’s happening here. In the back of the US edition it says ‘Look for Book 2 in the Keepers Trilogy’, without mentioning a date. How very frustrating to see that and assume that Book 2 is already out! No wonder there is so much confusion. The Australian edition is just as bad – it says ‘Coming soon!’, but of course a year isn’t ‘soon’ at all when you are ten years old. There’s nothing I can do about it, unfortunately. I’d love to have the second book come out RIGHT NOW, but then (hopefully) your daughter would want the third one, and that’s not written yet.

    2. Lian says:

Glad to hear it, Vered, but sorry about the long wait. Actually it’s only slightly more than nine months now. (Not that that’s much better than a year when you’re ten!)

  3. Daniel says:

    great post, thanks for sharing

  4. Bahar says:

    Dear mrs.Tanner,
Would it be possible you can send me a few pages of the first chapter?

    1. Lian says:

Nope. The publishers would kill me. Besides, what’s the use of reading a few pages? You’d still have to wait nine months for the rest of the book. Personally I never read those bits in the backs of novels where they say ‘Read the first chapter of the next exciting book in this series …’ What’s the point? For me it’s the whole book or nothing.

  5. Kathryn says:

I have just finished Museum of Thieves (a Christmas present for my younger son, which I promptly grabbed up) and, like others, came looking for the next installment. Wonderful story — dreadful amount of time to wait for more!

    1. Lian says:

Thanks Kathryn, I hope your younger son also enjoys it. (You DID give it back to him when you’d finished, didn’t you?)

  6. georgia says:

what will the date be in October when it comes out? cos i want to get it as soon as possible!

    1. Lian says:

Hi Georgia, I don’t know the exact date for City of Lies, but I reckon it will be similar to the first book, which came out right at the beginning of October in the US, and at the end of September in Australia (I think the Australian publication date was about the 26th Sept, and the US was a week later). It’s hard to wait, isn’t it, when there’s a series that you like? I suspect there will be plenty of publicity beforehand, so keep your eyes open, and check back here later in the year, by which time we should have a definite date. I’m really glad that you liked the first book so much. That’s the sort of thing that an author loves to hear!

  7. georgia says:

as soon as i finished reading a different series of books i was looking for another series to read and i found this book and as soon as i had started reading it i just could not put it down! it was one of the best books i have read and i have read a lot of books!

  8. georgia says:

thanks for your reply! just out of curiosity, have you written any other books other than the keepers?
    thanks,
    Georgia.

    1. Lian says:

I’ve got another book called Rats! which is nothing at all like Museum of Thieves. It’s kind of a fast and funny romp with a bit of a mystery, and it’s set in present-day Australia. It was only published in Australia and it’s been out of print for a while.

  9. georgia says:

thanks for your answer! i will be sure to keep an eye out for it!

  10. Kay says:

    Hi Lian
I loved your first book and now i have an horrible wait for the next one!! Oh well it is worth it! Could you recommened any other authors or books for me to read in the mean time?

    1. Lian says:

Hi Kay, thanks for the message. Glad you think the wait is worth it. Other authors – Hmm. Have you looked at my list of favourite books? There are some good ones there. Another possibility would be Megan Whalen Turner’s wonderful series starting with The Thief. I’m about to add it to my list of favourite YA books.

  11. Kay says:

Thanks that was really helpful! Can’t wait till September!!!

  12. sarah says:

when will the next book come out i really love the first one and i cant wait for the seconed one to come out please tell me

    1. Lian says:

Hello Sarah, thanks for letting me know how much you liked Museum. The next book, City of Lies, will be out at the end of September. It’s a long time, I know. I keep counting the months to see how many it is. We’re currently at just under seven months away!

  13. sarah says:

hey! ever since i read the preview i’ve been dying to buy MUSEUM OF THIEVES. my mom has promised me she’ll get it if i get above 90% in my finals. i’ve done pretty well but pray for me coz badly want to read that book.

    1. Lian says:

Hi Sarah, thanks for the message. I have my fingers and toes crossed for you, and I’m sure you’ll do well! When you’ve read the book, let me know what you thought.

  14. sarah says:

i got above 90% and my mom has bought THE BOOK. its an awesome book and i cant wait to read CITY OF LIES. Can you tell me when will it come out ?

    1. Lian says:

Hey, Sarah, well done! I’m so pleased to hear that you did so well. Above 90% is terrific. And your mum bought you the book too! I’m really glad you liked it.
City of Lies will be out at the end of September – according to the Random House website it will be available on September 27th. That’s a long wait, I know, but I think you’ll be pleased when you get to read it at last. And just between you and me, I’ve seen the character drawings (done by the same artist as the ones in the first book) and they are wonderful. You even get to see what a slommerkin looks like!

      1. sarah says:

Lian can you atleast tell me whats the story ? please!!!!!:)

        1. Lian says:

He he he. (I’m trying to do a wicked laugh here!) No.

          1. sarah says:

well i will just have to hit the FAST FORWARD BUTTON and WAIT.

          2. Lian says:

There are times when a fast forward button would be very handy. But I’m not sure that this is one of them. Don’t forget that I’m still writing the third book, so if you get ahead of me there’ll be nothing at all to read when you get there. 🙂

  15. sarah says:

yay! you are tempting me too much. i might actually go right to the publishers and ask them to hand in the copy of CITY OF LIES.
