The ‘Ice Breaker’ rewrite

February 15th, 2013

I finished the first re-write of Ice Breaker last week, and am now letting it sit for a couple of weeks before rereading it.

Despite my initial resistance to making any changes, I think it’s probably much better. I’ve knocked about 6000 words off the first half of the book, and the whole thing is tighter and more exciting as a result. At least I think it is. Will have to wait for the read-through before I know for sure. If I read it straight away after writing it I can’t see it clearly, and either think it’s brilliant or total rubbish, whereas really it’s probably somewhere in between. πŸ™‚

As usual, my co-author Miss Mouse sat on my lap and made helpful suggestions as I worked.

As I said in a comment on my previous post, Ice Breaker will be coming out in Australia and New Zealand on November 1st, 2013. (Are you used to writing 2013 yet? I still look at it and think it’s next year.) My books usually come out in October, but my publishers moved it back a month. Still in time for Christmas, though!

And for all of you who have gone back to school and started a new grade, I hope it’s going well!

  3. Hannah says:

Will it be published in the US?

    1. Lian says:

I don’t know, Hannah. I very much hope so. I’m doing this rewrite because my American agent asked me to – she thought the book could be better and she turned out to be right. So she hasn’t actually shown the manuscript to any US publishers yet – she’s waiting until I finish the rewrite.

OMG I’m sooooooo excited! I bet it will be so good! In the Keepers, at the end of quite a few chapters I sat rigid, my mouth open, questions, fear and shock running around my brain. I bet that, wait… I KNOW that I will have so many of these my muscles will be sore from rididness! πŸ˜€ I’m unhappy that it comes out so late, but as long as it DOES come out I’m still ecxited!
LOOKING FORWARD TO IT MORE THAT MY BIRTHDAY, LOVE LILY

And another great story on storybird, Io and Lily. I do like all the detail you are putting in, and how you are drawing out the exciting parts of the story. As for what you have sent me, Io, How intriguing! I shall keep my eye on the letter box – that is, when I’m not writing!

      1. Lily says:

Really? And Io, I would like you to do the start of the next part, I’m too tired.
