A message from Goldie No One …
November 18th, 2012
I had a great message left on my blog a few weeks ago. It was from an 11-year-old girl called Maddy Lohse, and here’s what she said:
‘Sometimes I act like Goldie in trying to be like a shadow. I dressed up as her for our book week at school. Lots of kids kept asking me who I was. I told them Goldie No One. They said it was an impressive name and I showed them the City of Lies book. It was a fun day doing the parade.’
I was very pleased to hear that I wasn’t the only person trying to master Concealment by Imitation of Nothingness. π And I was even more pleased when Maddy’s dad Neal sent me this photo of Maddy dressed as Goldie No One, ripped clothes, home-made mask and all. I gather she also tried talking to her friends in lies, but none of them got it. They were obviously not Keepers fans!
Isn’t it a great photo? I think Maddy looks mysterious and brave, and I can imagine her having the sort of adventures that Goldie has.
I’d love to see some more pictures of people dressed as characters from the Keepers. So – who’d like to send me a photo of themselves in costume? If you do, I’ll put them up on this blog, so that everyone can admire you. Send photos to lian at liantanner dot com. (I’ve written it like that to fool the spam bots. You – not being a robot – can use your wit and cunning to turn it into an email address.)
Maddy looks cool!(And pretty)
Io
I agree, Io!
Hi, Lian! I’m Gabi, Io’s sister! She told me your books were awesome! I am reading the first chapter even though I don’t understand a thing it is about. So I am guessing I probably have to read your books when I am a little older.
Gabi
Hi Gabi, I’m dreadfully sorry you don’t understand it. Maybe wait another year, then try again.
Lian, I am going to send you a picture of a letter from the Fugleman! The letter might not be what you imagine it but it is how I imagine it.
Looking forward to receiving it, Io.
What authors would you recommend that is nearly as good as you. I checked the other people’s books thing but I couldn’t see anything as good as yours.
π The ones on ‘Other people’s books’ are my favourites. Have you read anything by Diana Wynne Jones? If not, give her a try. I like her books a lot and have been very influenced by her.
Ok! I’ll try! π
I’m DEFINATELY going to be involved in this. But who to dress up as? I’m thinking Bonnie or Goldie. You would remember the description of Toadspit and Goldie you did in the museum of thieves, when the Fugleman captures them (SPOILER) it was something like “They had hollow cheeks, and wild hair. They were covered with bruises and cuts, thier clothes dirty and torn in small places” it’s not that but something like that. I’m thinking of doing her like that, with miming (silent acting) the expretion on her face after You-Know-Who gets shot.
Or maybe Bonnie, in the third book, you know when she’s guarding with Cat? (SPOILER) maybe that . . . .
THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM THE FIRST AND THIRD KEEPERS BOOKS! IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THEM DON”T READ THIS!
Lily, I can’t wait to see this! I really hope you do it!
GO MADDY FOR BEING BRAVE ENOUGH TO SEND THAT PICTURE AND GIVE LIAN THE IDEA TO GET OTHER PEOPLE TO DRESS UP!!!!!!!!
I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE BUT YOU RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally! π
True! π

Hi, Shannon! No it probably isn’t too late because I sent mine 2 days ago!
π oh well ill enter in the dress up comp!:)
Hi Lian Tanner! I am from Mt Nelson Primary School. You visited our school and told us about the path of beasts launch! I loved the path of Beasts book but unfortunitly I was unable to go to the launch. I think reading all of the keepers books were great fun to read and Lian can you, pretty pretty please write another series just like this one with adventure and excitment. This series was a joy for my family! Everyone in my family has read the books and they all said when they finished each book “I hope the next book is as brilliant as this one” They loved the keepers. Please can you write another series. It doesn’t have to have the same characters or anything! It can be completly different. Please! Please! Please!
From Elena
Hi Elena, what a nice message to receive! You’ll be pleased to know that there will be another book coming out in October next year, called Ice Breaker. It’s not part of a series, but it IS full of adventure and excitement, and I think you’ll like it. And now I’m busy working on a new book, which is set 500 years before the time of Goldie and Toadspit, back when Olga Ciavolga and Dan were children. It’s the story of how they met, and how the museum got started. So you see I am definitely keeping writing, and because I also like books full of adventure and excitement (and a bit of fantasy), I expect I will keep writing them!
π
On Behalf of our school, I would like to ask you some questions:
Why did you decide to be a writer?
What other talets do you have?
If you hadn’t become a writer what would you be?
Could you send me an email?
From Elena
Will do, Elena! π
